Nowadays, ambergris is no longer extracted from animals, but is produced synthetically. Even in the past, sperm whales did not usually have to die to produce the substance for perfume production. Amber was naturally excreted by the whales, which is why it was so rare and precious. It had to be painstakingly collected by hand from beaches in order to use it for the production of perfume. For conservation reasons, this practice is now banned.

The substance was found as a hard mass on beaches and it was originally assumed that the amber-like stones grew on the seabed. Nowadays we know that amber has an animal origin. It comes from the digestive tract of the sperm whale and is excreted when the animal dies or vomits. A hundred years ago, ambergris was still considered very valuable and was sought and collected on beaches on a large scale. Nowadays, it is easier to produce ambergris synthetically, as the trade in sperm whale products is prohibited for reasons of species protection. For animal welfare reasons, we therefore use high-quality synthetic ambergris alternatives.
